Welcome to Dharapuram,
and it is one of the fastest growing cities in Tamilnadu.
Situtated at the foot hills of Nilgriris and close to Coimbatore,Erode and
Tirupur, it is known as pleasant climate, peaceful atmosphere.
Dharapuram was
under the regimes of Cara kings in 850 A.D. Thereafter (in 1000 A.D. - 1275
A.D.) this place came under the rule of Cholas with Dharapuram as their
Headquarters. Subsequently it came under the control of Padiars (from 1276
A.D.). Only during this period, a ruler by name Veerapandian caused the digging
of Kalingarayan Channel. Then the Muslims (Modeen Sulthans) took over the rule
after which Nayaks of Madurai ruled. Then Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan had their
sway. In 1799 when Tippu fell to the British, the East Indian Company took over
the administration.
Dharapuram, a name given to it by the British, has through history seen its share of rulersand owners and today is part of the Erode district of Tamil Nadu. It is a quaint village, most
popular for the Hanuman temple. It is about 2 hours drive from Coimbatore, on the Madurai
route and the drive itself is picturesque with coconut trees and windmills sharing space
besides the road.
Every year in May, a festival is held at the temple, where thousands throng to be one of thechosen few to pull the chariot, holding the idol, through the village. The temple also serves as
the community center providing free food to many in the area. The temple is also unique in that
the sanctum containing the idol is open to the skies unlike the other temples.
Dharapuram is shielded by the Kodaikanal hills on side and the Amaravathy river, a tributary ofthe Cauvery, on the other. There are numerous picnic spots nearby, enough to make worthwhile
day trip from Coimbatore.
